Ex-Atlanta Falcons linebacker Deion Jones has been accused of “failing his duty of care” in the days following the September 2016 death of his then-fiancee, according to a lawsuit filed Friday in Atlanta.
The lawsuit, filed by the attorney general’s office, alleges that Jones, who retired from the NFL in June 2018, was charged with felony murder and felony reckless homicide in connection with the death of Brittany Stinson, who had been staying with Jones.
Stinson was found unresponsive in her apartment in January 2017 and died three days later.
A former football player at Georgia State University, Stinson graduated in December 2018 with a degree in criminal justice and law.
Her body was found by a neighbor on a rural property in rural Fulton County.
Jones is accused by the lawsuit of “deliberately failing to follow appropriate procedures” after Stinson’s death, including “delaying the autopsy and obtaining toxicology reports from multiple medical examiners.”
He was not arrested or charged in her death.
A statement from the attorney for the Stinson family said the lawsuit was “frivolous” and that “Mr. Jones is not a party to this lawsuit and is not entitled to receive or benefit from this lawsuit.”
